Water Storage Mistakes and Ideas

Try to store 1 gallon (4 litres) per person, per day. If you can, store water for at least 6 months or longer.

Freeze Dried Fruits are CRUCIAL!

Our bodies need enzymes to be able to digest food and move it through the intestinal tract. This poses a problem with eating cooked food, because it is enyzmatically dead.  The result of eating only cooked stored food would be serious constipation problems -- NOT FUN!

Freeze-dried fruit is the answer.  Enzymatically intact, and a raw food, freeze-dried fruits will ensure that your bowels give you no trouble during the six weeks that we are to stay indoors from the prophecied blood rains, or even during the months that we will have to wait for a food crop to be harvested.

There are two companies that sell freeze-dried fruits:

The first company is Augason Farms, in Utah. They have a good variety and their prices are good. Watch out that you are not buying dehydrated (such as banana slices) because dehydrated foods do not have as long a shelf-life.  Here is a picture of one of their cans:

The second company is Nutristore.  They have a good variety of all freeze-dried fruits, but I have not been able to determine where they are located.  They appear to be an online company only, and sell through Amazon.  They are more expensive.  Here is a picture of one of their cans:

Be food storage smart:  stock up on freeze-dried fruits.

Hereford Corned Beef

Brazillian cows get a lot of sun and nutritious grass to eat, so this product is a bonus for this reason alone.

I placed it in the fridge in order to make the meat cold before I sliced it, as the can suggested.

I find the taste very much like Spam.  The fat mixed in is, frankly, delicious.  [Remember that fat is a necessary nutrient for proper brain function].

One 1/2-inch-thick slice is filling, so one tin will easily feed a family.

Also, there are recipes available online, but the nice thing is that it can be enjoyed right out of the can, as is.

Price: Very cheap.

Sold at:  Walmart

Expiry date:  2024 (approximately a 10-year shelf life).

This meat will be easier to digest than dried meats and will help to provide variety for protein sources.

Beef Jerky is a Winner!

Great taste, no nasty chemicals, and a good shelf life!

Great taste, no nasty chemicals, and a good shelf life!

Beef jerky is the historical food choice of outdoorsmen. We can jerky (dry) any animal meat, even fish!

This beef jerky tasted great!  Has a nice chew to it, and is definitely salty, so it will encourage water drinking.

This fact alone may be the best reason to keep it in the house.  It will help those reluctant to drink water, to drink more of it! 🙂

SHELF LIFE:  One year.

Should be consumed within 3 days of opening, but I went through mine in a few minutes, it was that tasty!

SUGGESTION:  Store jerky where it is out of sight and out of mind, so that you don't raid your stores before you really need them.

This company, McSweeney's, makes their jerkies without nasty chemicals or corn products.

INGREDIENTS:  Beef, sea salt, cane sugar, pineapple juice, apple cider vinegar, spices, molasses, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), garlic, sodium nitrite, smoke.

This product is non-kosher, gluten free, low in fat, high in protein, and naturally smoked.

Lasagna by Backpacker's Pantry

This freeze-dried lasagna just takes 2 and 1/4 cups of boiling water and a 15-20 minute wait time, covered, to prepare.  There is definitely enough to feed two adults or more in a sheltering-in-place situation.

Just so you know, freeze-dried food comes in very small bits, and even the rottini pasta is smaller sized.  When I poured this out of the pouch, it was mostly powder-like, except for the bits of meat and mushroom, and it heats up to a thick stew-like consistency.

The taste was of a rich lasagna. Very satisfying!

For a deluxe meal version:  Introduce a "bite" with some crackers, veggie sticks, or bread.

The sauce of this lasagna is particularly fine. This is definitely rich food which not only fills you up, but makes you feel satisfied.

SHELF LIFE:  6 years

COMMENT:  I found the freeze-dried celery bits tough to chew, so your kids and elderly members of the family may put these bits aside, but otherwise the taste really makes this meal.

I ate this meal twice in a row, half for lunch and half for dinner.  After lunch I had shallow cracks appear over the surface of my tongue, and minimal tongue swelling.  This was a minor allergic reaction which I could ignore.

DAY 2:  No migraines or other allergic reactions, no G-I tract problems. This food gets 2 thumbs up!!

Creamy Potato Cheddar Soup by Alpine Aire

The potato buds in the soup give it a lumpier look, despite my thorough stirring. However, the product quality is very good!

The potato buds in the soup give it a lumpier look, despite my thorough stirring. However, the product quality is very good!

This dehydrated soup just takes 2 cups of boiling water, and a 10-12 minute wait time, covered, to prepare.  It makes a heaping bowlful of soup!

The taste is cheddary, and the potato buds were soft and moist.

I used to eat Idaho mashed potatoes  all of the time growing up, so I find this has a similar texture.

For a deluxe meal version:  Introduce a different texture experience or two with something crunchy like saltine crackers.  I put my crackers into the bottom of the soup bowl, and they were pushed up by the soup, so I had a fun eating the soup like a dip on my crackers!

I love the warm full feeling it gives my stomach.  This is definitely good food which fills you up.

COMMENT:  I liked the amount of spiciness from the peppers.  It was just enough to take away the bland feeling of eating dehydrated potatoes.

However, I would not recommend eating this more than once a week, as the flavour leaves a lasting impression.
