If you want to know what you can do in the event of nuclear war, then this book is required reading.
The solutions strategized in Bruce Clayton's Life After Doomsday are practical, and he teaches the survivability of nuclear radiation from U.S. military research sources.
Free online pdf (but I highly recommend getting the book itself):

Cresson Kearny had real families spend a few days in his expedient nuclear shelters.
At the time of writing this book he said the US government was spending 15 cents per citizen for nuclear survival equipment, while the Swiss government was spending $5.50 per citizen.
The author developed a radiation meter using unwaxed dental floss and the material inside drywall (found in the walls of most homes).
His extensive research helped Bruce Clayton write his book (above).
This book is a MUST HAVE.
Cresson Kearney is a modern-day hero and he deserves national recognition for the work he has done to prepare Americans to survive a nuclear war.

Mr. Kearny shows how to make survival materials using household goods: a fallout meter, an air filter for your shelter, even different design ideas for fallout shelters. A lot of research went into writing this book!

Urban survival is about surviving in place. When moving to a far-away retreat is not an option for you and your family, then these two books on urban survival are essential reading.
The first is Ragnar's Urban Survival: A Hard Times Guide to Staying Alive in the City by Ragnar Benson has many gems of wisdom, including: The Rule of 3. The author explains how the Nez Perce People survived by using this rule. Simply ensure that you have 3 separate sources for the basics to support life: water, food, shelter, heat, etc. His chapters also discuss: combat in built up areas; the government's view of survivalists; water; sources of energy; food; survival food preparation; emergency shelter in cities; caching and storage; trading; guns; and survival nursing. Available from Palladin Press.
For a look at surviving in place solutions that have come along 20 years later, David Morris' Urban Survival Guide is a great companion book. He tells of websites that monitor terrorist activities, and how to find out what is really going on in your area. This book's chapters look at the following topics: the will to survive; current potential threats; the 72-hour kit; flu and pandemics; chemical & biological attacks and ghetto medicine; mutual aid; hardening your house; economics of survival; alternative means of communication; lessons learned from Katrina; psychology for survival situations; urban movement after a disaster. When you can move now, or have the money to set up a retreat away from a population centre, then Ragnar Benson's The Survival Retreat shows you how to choose a secure retreat location:
If your aim is to hide out of sight to avoid unpleasant confrontations, spreading of disease, etc., then this book is worth checking out.
It is no good to be too near a highway if you do not want to be over run by evacuating city dwellers.
Wilderness is great, but it is good to check historical flood records for the last hundred years before you build that cabin near the lake.
Evacuation strategies are also discussed state-by-state, as is the self-sufficiency of each state.
There is much valuable research here, including local prohibitive laws.
The focus of this book is the United States of America, with some basic relocation information for Canada.
Of key interest: a map shows nuclear reactor locations throughout the world.

For those of us who are cash-poor, this book provides instructions into how to purchase junk land now:
The trailer living ideas that the author provides are common sense, and they take into consideration dealing with extremes in temperatures.
Physical stress, mental/emotional stress, diarrhea or vomitting can all throw our body's electrolyte (salt & sugar) balance into a bad state of imbalance.
If left untreated, a person can faint, go into shock, and even die.
This book is light enough to pack and it has the essential recipe for restoring electrolyte balance in the body -- besides other great information.
Here is the electrolyte re-balancing formula:
Mix 1/2 teaspoon salt and 8 teaspoons sugar in 4 cups water. Drink slowly.
